If you live in a rural location, or if your home was built before city sewer lines were installed, you probably have a septic tank. Your septic tank is responsible for anything that goes down your shower drain, sink drain, washing machine, garbage disposal, or toilets. These tanks may be constructed from plastic or concrete and are buried underground. Septic tanks should be pumped routinely for good maintenance. If your tank becomes too full, the damage can cause expensive repairs—and a foul stench.

Your buried septic tank connects to lateral field pipes, which allow sanitary water to safely seep into the ground. This soil absorption process usually creates a patch of lush, thick grass above your septic system. As Erma Bombeck wrote, “The grass is always greener over the tank.”

Inside the septic tank, heavier waste settles in the base of the tank and creates layers of sludge, while greases and lighter waste products float to the top. If the heavy sludge accumulates too much or too quickly, solid waste products can get into the lateral field pipes and clog them. If these pipes get clogged, unsanitary water will seep into the surrounding soil, where you (and your neighbors) will begin to smell it. In extreme cases, sewage can appear in your yard or began to bubble up in your household drains. Believe us—you don’t want that.
